Guidelines for all Social Media & Networking Sites
All UI Health and UIC Employees:
All UI Health employees are required to review LD 4.15 Social Media Guidelines (password required) before participating in any UI Health or UIC related social or networking websites.
Patient information is confidential protected health information.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) says that a patient has control of his or her own protected health information. No one else can release that information without consent of the patient. The same rules that apply to everything else you do at UI Health also apply to social media activities. Remember that even the fact that the patient/doctor relationship exists is itself Protected Health Information.
Be responsible, be trustworthy
Do not violate the trust of the people you engage with online by misleading them. The rules and expectations that apply to you offline as a member of the UI Health community also apply in online social media and network sites. You are accountable for your actions. Know and follow the University of Illinois's Web Protection and Privacy Policy.
Be transparent
Be upfront about who you are and who you work for. We encourage physicians and staff to provide comment in their areas of expertise. However, if you are providing commentary other than your subject-area expertise you need to make it clear that you are not the official spokesperson for the UI Health System. If you are communicating about your work at UI Health, use your real name, identify that you work at the UI Health System, and be clear about what you do.
Respect copyright and fair use
Respect the laws governing copyright and fair use of copyrighted material owned by others. This includes the University of Illinois copyrights. Acquire written permission before posting copyrighted content.
Be mindful
The lines between personal and professional are blurred in social networks. If you identify yourself as a member of the UI Health System, you are connected to your employer, colleagues and partners. Ensure that the profiles and content you create online are consistent with your work and reflect UI Health's guidelines and policies.
Maintain brand guidelines and visual identity
Guidelines are available to support correct usage of UI Health's logos and colors
When in doubt, ask for help
If you are unsure about how to respond or what to post please email us at UIHealthMktg@uic.edu or call 312.413.9043 for advice and support.
NOTE: Due to the evolving nature of social media & networking these guidelines are subject to revision by the UI Health Marketing & Communications department.
