Naso-Alveolar Molding
Reshaping the Lip and Nose Before Surgery
Cleft lip and palate affects the look and function of the baby's lip and nose. Naso-Alveolar Molding (NAM) helps the plastic surgeon repair the cleft lip and nose by reshaping them before the surgery. The Cleft Craniofacial Center is a pioneer in this approach to improving the outcomes of our children's lip and nasal repair.
Cut Materials
This may include several different treatment options prior to cleft lip surgery. It may involve the use of special skin tape placed on the upper lip across the cleft site to draw the lip segment together as the infant grows. In some cases, it may require a special plastic plate that fits into the infant's mouth coupled with tape, a rubber strap, or small plastic conformers. All of these are designed to mold the nose and lip to their proper shapes for a better surgical outcome.
