After Cleft Lip Surgery
Cleft Lip Repair Care (post-surgery)
- Keep the area and suture lines clean
- Use a Q-tip dipped in soapy water and gently dap the sutures
- Apply a coating of topical antibiotics (Bacitracin ointment, triple antibiotic ointment, Neosporin ointment)
- Please clean after each feeding and at least three times a day
Suture Removal
Some babies may need to return to the operating room to have the sutures removed. This depends on the type of suture your surgeon uses.
Feeding
Feed your baby the same way as before the surgery. It may take some time for the baby to get used the lip repair. There are no restrictions.
Pain and Discomfort
Your baby will have minimal pain or discomfort after this surgery. If your baby is fussy, please use Tylenol. Please follow the instructions on the label based on your babies weight and age.
Antibiotics
Your baby will NOT need antibiotics for lip repair
Ear drops
Your baby may need ear drops if ear tubes are placed. This is a prescription you will get at the hospital.
Appointments after Surgery
Please make an appointment 10-14 days after surgery. Please call the Craniofacial Center at 312.996.7546.
EMERGENCY!
If you feel that your baby is in distress, take your baby to the nearest emergency room. Please call the Craniofacial Center and let us know what is happening at 312-996-7546. If it is after hours, this same number will connect to the operator and ask to speak to the Plastic Surgery Resident/Doctor on call.
