Vertical Maxillary Excess

Upper Jaw Impaction with Lower Jaw Surgery

  • Braces are put on first.
  • When the teeth are aligned, you are ready for jaw surgery.
  • Jaw surgery is performed inside the mouth, without outside scars.
  • The surgery shortens the upper jaw to allow the upper lip to lengthen, which decreases the amount of gum (gingiva) shown. Some patients may also need a lower jaw surgery to bring up the lower jaw to match the position of the upper jaw.
  • Titanium plates are used to hold the bone together until it heals.
  • The jaws are never wired closed.
  • Dental elastics are used to guide the new bite.
  • Braces are continued after surgery.
