Vertical Maxillary Excess
Upper Jaw Impaction with Lower Jaw Surgery
- Braces are put on first.
- When the teeth are aligned, you are ready for jaw surgery.
- Jaw surgery is performed inside the mouth, without outside scars.
- The surgery shortens the upper jaw to allow the upper lip to lengthen, which decreases the amount of gum (gingiva) shown. Some patients may also need a lower jaw surgery to bring up the lower jaw to match the position of the upper jaw.
- Titanium plates are used to hold the bone together until it heals.
- The jaws are never wired closed.
- Dental elastics are used to guide the new bite.
- Braces are continued after surgery.
