Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery

A cleft lip or palate not only affects a child's appearance but also their ability to properly eat, speak, and breathe. A plastic/craniofacial surgeon will perform surgery to correct the cleft and or palate. Our surgeons are board-certified and specially trained in the treatment of children with clefts and have extensive experience in this area. Each surgical plan is personalized to meet the individual needs of each patient.

  • Cleft Lip Surgery: The goal of the lip surgery is to close the cleft, with minimal scarring, to create a more natural appearance of the lip and nose while also ensuring normal development of the face. The surgery is usually performed between 3 and 5 months of age.
  • Palate Surgery: The goal of a palate surgery is to close the cleft so that the child will be able develop normal speech. This surgery is usually performed by age 1, however it can vary depending on the child's specific needs and condition.

As a child grows, they may have other plastic surgeries on their palate or jaw to help improve appearance, position, and function. Some children may require a surgery to correct any residual nasal deformity as they get older.

Our surgical team will explain all procedures and answer any questions you have before surgery.
