Nationally Recognized Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade 'A' Spring 2026

UI Health today earned a 4-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating is a national quality rating system developed to help patients compare hospitals based on overall performance. The rating summarizes dozens of quality measures into one score, making it easier for consumers to understand hospital performance at a glance. Ratings are based on key areas of care, including mortality, readmissions, safety, patient experience, and timely and effective care. Hospitals receive an overall rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high) stars.

On May 6, UI Health received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a twice-annual national rating assigning a single letter grade to hospitals based on their ability to protect patients from preventable harm and medical errors.

“This is a historic moment at UI Health,” said Dr. Sagar Harwani, Chief Quality Officer at the University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics. “We’ve earned our highest ever safety ratings — an “A” Grade from Leapfrog and 4 stars from CMS. These achievements represent the collective work and commitment of all UI Health staff. They validate the excellent care we know we provide. And they let our patients and community know UI Health is a great place to receive care.”

The 4-Star CMS Quality Rating is the latest national accolade for UI Health, following the recent “A” Hospital Safety Grade and the organization achieving Magnet Recognition® in July 2025.
