The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is a clinical enterprise that includes The University of Illinois Hospital, a 451-bed tertiary care hospital accredited by The Joint Commission; 30+ outpatient clinics throughout Chicago and Illinois; and the Mile Square Health Center network of 11 Federally Qualified Health Centers.

A part of the University of Illinois Chicago, the UI Health enterprise includes patient-centered research entities, including the University of Illinois Cancer Center, and the academic and research activities of UIC’s seven health sciences colleges.

Key Clinical Programs

Cancer Services
The University of Illinois Cancer Center is fully accredited by the Commission on Cancer and offers specialized programs in genetic testing and survivorship to provide comprehensive care at every stage of patients’ cancer journey. The Cancer Center at UI Health participates in hundreds of clinical trials annually.

Cardiology
The Division of Cardiology is recognized by the American Heart Association for quality care and outcomes for heart diseases and conditions.

Cleft Craniofacial Center
The Cleft Craniofacial Center at UI Health is one of the oldest and most comprehensive clinical care and research centers in the United States for children and adults with cleft and craniofacial deformities, and is certified by the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association.

Neurosciences
The Departments of Neurology & Neurosurgery at UI Health have led the way in groundbreaking treatment and research in the areas of stroke, brain aneurysms, brain tumors, degenerative spinal disease, and pain management. UI Health is a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center and is accredited as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center

Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences
The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences has a historic legacy of unparalleled clinical care, outstanding education, and innovative research. Home to Illinois Eye & Ear, we have provided the most advanced care to patients with serious and complicated eye conditions for more than 150 years.

Primary Care
With experts in Internal Medicine, Family & Community Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Geriatrics, UI Health primary care physicians specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health issues that impact everyone — from children to older adults.

Sickle Cell
The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at UI Health is the largest in the Midwest, providing individualized care for pediatric, transitional, and adult patients. Our innovative peripheral blood stem cell transplant program has cured more than 60 patients of sickle cell disease.

Surgery & Robotic Surgery
The Department of Surgery is a worldwide leader in providing the most advanced surgical treatments, including robotic and minimally invasive surgery, for complex diseases and cancers of the colon, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, stomach, and urinary tract. Home to the state-of-the-art Bruno & Sallie Pasquinelli Outpatient Surgery Center, UI Health specializes in same-day surgeries that avoid hospital stays.

Transplant
The Division of Transplantation is a national leader in solid-organ transplant. We are one of the leading Chicago institutions for performing kidney, liver, and small bowel transplant, and we are among the nation’s top in transplant centers for simultaneous pancreas/kidney transplant.

  • UI Health earned an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for Spring 2026. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries.
  • UI Health has a 4-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating is a national quality rating system based on key areas of care, including mortality, readmissions, safety, patient experience, and timely and effective care.
  • UI Health in 2025 achieved Magnet Recognition® for the first time in the organization’s history. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program® is the most prestigious designation a healthcare organization can receive for nursing practice and quality patient care.
  • UI Health is certified by The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest level of certification for stroke.
  • UI Health received the American Heart Association’s Commitment to Quality Award for achieving high performance across three or more clinical areas in the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines® program. UI Health has been recognized with nine Get With The Guidelines® quality achievement awards for Stroke, Heart Failure, Coronary Artery Disease, and Resuscitation care.
  • UI Health is designated as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corp. and was the first institution in the United States to receive this recognition.
  • UI Health is accredited as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers for expertise in evaluating, monitoring, and treating patients with complex epilepsy.
  • UI Health is accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer Centers, which ensures people with breast cancer and diseases get full support from diagnosis to recovery.
  • The University of Illinois Cancer Center is fully accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, which develops comprehensive, patient-centered standards for cancer programs.
  • The Bariatric Surgery Program is recognized as an American College of Surgeons Level One Center of Excellence and certified as a Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Qualifications by the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Accreditation Quality Improvement Program.
  • The Department of Radiation Oncology is recognized by the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s APEx Program for Excellence for its commitment to safety and quality.
  • The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep & Allergy is an Accredited Comprehensive Sleep Center by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
  • The Blood & Marrow Transplant Program is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy for meeting the highest standards of hematopoietic cellular therapy.
  • The Cleft Craniofacial Center at UI Health is certified by the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association for developing treatment plans and providing coordinated care within the framework of the patient's overall development.

  • The Melanated Group Midwifery Care at UI Health works to improve pregnancy outcomes for Black women through care teams of Black midwives, nurses, and doulas.
  • The Two-Generation Clinic at UI Health provides a unique model of care that allows families to visit one clinic for all of the primary care services they need, saving time and allowing postpartum parents and children to develop long-term relationships with primary care providers.
  • Volunteer Services at UI Health is one of the largest hospital volunteer programs in the state, comprising more than 1,000 students and community members. The program’s Volunteer-to-Employee Pathway offers free training for entry-level healthcare positions to help volunteers and support staff transition into permanent healthcare roles.
  • UI Health is a part of West Side United, a coalition of community organizations, local businesses, and anchor hospitals that collaborates to improve health and economic well-being for historically under-resourced residents of Chicago’s West Side.
  • UI Health partners with Wings Program, Inc., to provide 24/7 bedside and on-site domestic violence intervention services. UI Health was the first hospital in Chicago to implement the WINGS Hospital Program.
