UI Health named ‘Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes’
Monday, June 15, 2026
UI Health today earned the “Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes” award.
This designation, launched in 2023, is a joint recognition from the Leapfrog Group and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and is awarded to adult and specialty hospitals for performance in key areas that support specialized care for diabetes patients, including:
- Structures to support patient-centered care, such as diabetes self-management and hypoglycemia protocols.
- Preparation for scheduled inpatient surgeries.
- HbA1c testing, meals, and insulin regimens for hospitalized patients.
- Specialized care teams, patient education, and discharge planning for high-risk patients.
UI Health is one of just 37 hospitals to receive this recognition.
Of the 37 million people in the United States living with diabetes, approximately 8 million are admitted to the hospital each year with related complications. Like all patients, people living with diabetes face serious risks from preventable medical errors.
The “Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes” program combines the ADA’s extensive resources and reach within the diabetes community with Leapfrog’s expertise in measurement and public reporting. Together, these organizations help people with diabetes and their families identify healthcare organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to the quality and safety of diabetes care.
UI Health last month earned an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for Spring 2026 and a 4-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
